RIVER OF REASON [Restore]: The Vagus Nerve
After stirring up the internal waters, we can start to observe our body’s emotional currents as they collide with our thoughts and beliefs at the River of Reason. The body’s information superhighway is our longest nerve and connects the body to our brain and brain to our body (bidirectionally). This nerve (called the Vagus nerve) is a mixed nerve composed of 80% “afferent” (sensory) fibers; which means that 80% of the information it’s carrying is in the form of sensory information going from the body to the brain. This is why working with the senses and the physical body is so important for stress or trauma recovery and finding the root cause of our emotional undercurrents. At the banks of the river we observe our physical reactions to emotions, and the ways our mind starts to play a part.
THE WILD SIDE: This spot on the map represents the spine and is where our emotions (in the body) and feelings (in the mind) meet at the river. The very close Forest of Feels pulls water directly from our river mixed with emotion and logic. The forest is where we layer our own thoughts, beliefs, and opinions around an event. This combination of mind and body experiences forms our feelings of the forest; and is why paying attention to the emotional waters that our roots (belief systems) are drinking from is so important.
Getting to know the currents of our River of Reason (or emotional patterns in life) means understanding how best to navigate them when the waters are high and pushing us up against the walls of our Vagal Valley (Vagus nerve). Emotional blocks (or dams) cause disruptions in our flow (acceptance), but watch for spiraling emotions in the whirlpool, or it will spit you back into the Emotion Ocean.
Eight main attractions make up the Human Hangover® map. These spaces guide us through developing a communication network within our inner landscape, so we can be conscious creators of our outer world. By using nature as a source of connection, we can pull on the familiar experiences of our physical senses, the symbolism and wisdom of mother nature, and create a personalized guide for our unique nervous system signature.
After completing an area on the map, specific information gathered at that location is then added to your Human Hangover® Remedy. By the end your remedy will be a step-by-step, personalized guide for that specific emotion or area of focus. This can be especially helpful to reference while trying to maintain longterm balance. When that emotion situation comes up or is triggered in the future, you’ll have a customized guide on how to work your body and mind through it together.
Remember to set-up a healthy support system and have medical professionals in place before diving in. Exploring unprocessed emotions can be overwhelming or cause mental and physical fatigue. Have a personal plan in place to help you navigate heavy feelings or experiences that may arise, in a safe and healthy way. Above all- be open, be curious, and have fun!
