EGO ISLAND [Regulate]: The Nervous System
The nervous system is the control center of our physical and mental states, she’s the boss of the body and mind. Studies show us how important the nervous system is for trauma and mental health healing- but it’s also vital for our immune system, hormones, thought processes, impulses, emotions, memory centers, and overall health. On Ego Island we get curious about areas of dysregulation in our body (of water) that need re-balancing and learn regulation techniques that help us safely move across our emotional waters.
THE WILD SIDE: Ego Island symbolizes fear and is the tailbone (coccyx) area of the body. Here we get to listen, observe, and make friends with our fears and discomforts. A healthy Ego Island might have a lighthouse or an owl with great sight in the shadows. These would signify shedding light on areas that need attention, having a healthy relationship with fear, and listening to what it’s telling us.
Although exposed to the elements on the island, we can use this perspective to watch for dramatic change in waters and weather. When our emotional waters are stirred, there’s no better place to observe the waves then on Ego Island. This is where emotions can make us feel stranded or isolated, and oftentimes leave us feeling furthest from logical thought. However this can sometimes be a blessing as it slows us down to wait, watch, and observe our emotions. As OWL likes to say, Observe With Love.
It’s also where watching our weather systems (our mood or the moods of others) rolling in and out can come in handy. This can affect the waves in our Emotion Ocean and reminds us to use our breath (the wind) to calm our emotional waters when needed. Eight main attractions make up the Human Hangover® map. These spaces guide us through developing a communication network within our inner landscape, so we can be conscious creators of our outer world. By using nature as a source of connection, we can pull on the familiar experiences of our physical senses, the symbolism and wisdom of mother nature, and create a personalized guide for our unique nervous system signature.
After completing an area on the map, specific information gathered at that location is then added to your Human Hangover® Remedy. By the end your remedy will be a step-by-step, personalized guide for that specific emotion or area of focus. This can be especially helpful to reference while trying to maintain longterm balance. When that emotion situation comes up or is triggered in the future, you’ll have a customized guide on how to work your body and mind through it together.
Remember to set-up a healthy support system and have medical professionals in place before diving in. Exploring unprocessed emotions can be overwhelming or cause mental and physical fatigue. Have a personal plan in place to help you navigate heavy feelings or experiences that may arise, in a safe and healthy way. Above all- be open, be curious, and have fun!
